This is pretty much what it says on the tin, a retelling of an old english poem/play by J R R Tolkien with accompanying essays. It is interesting to read in the context of Anglo-Saxon ethics and a modern response to those ethics. Tolkien essentially makes the play a dialogue between heroism as self-sacrificing bravery vs heroism as ideals of chivalry. It is interesting to then consider this piece in the context of Tolkien’s own life and response to WW1.

This felt like walking through the door in the middle of a conversation, being very entertained, but still not having a clue what's going on. I don't know a lot about this period of time, or the the battle of Maldon, and was hoping the essays would provide a little bit of clarity...They did about the language used but not the events within the text.

That's fine! It was still fun to listen to as Tolkien fan.

The alliterative verse is beautiful and it’s pleasant to hear Tolkien’s actual voice in this recording.
