“Cruelty, harshness, pain: no one shielded us from the realities of life, and that made us strong.”

This has to be one of my favourite novellas in the Ghost of the Shadow Market.
We get to see something I been always curious about. The young Valentine and his Circle. I totally would love to see more of that.

This storyline follows on Celine. Which I find very interesting. We see a glimpse and mention of her in previous shadowhunter books but we never get to see a full story and character so this was a nice introduction.
I enjoy we see another side of the Circle. That shows that not everyone in the Circle is strong, brave or follow the same values as Valentine.
Celine grows up in a very tough childhood with her parents.
That cause her to be easily persuaded by Valentine by the way he treats her.
Valentine makes her feel wanted, belong and important hence why it cause what she does in the story.

We definitely get to see a huge development of The Lost Herondale which makes so much sense if you read The Dark Artifices series.

OMG I JUST LOVE ALL THESE CONNECTIONS.

“Feeling is what makes us human. Even the most difficult feelings. Perhaps especially those. Love, loss, longing—this is what it means to be truly alive.”

I started this story a couple months ago and I didn’t think it was gonna be this good but oh my god! It was! It was so dark and sad yet so lovely! I definitely thought it was gonna have a darker ending but I’m still satisfied with how it ended. I want more!

Celine Montclaire is so much more than we thought. We learn so much more about her in this book and I loved every minute of it.

Other than that, there were many other interesting stories in this novella. We learn so much. Loved this one a lot.

-So we got a Céline's backstory & we know all information we've had on her (personality) previously was false
-Céline's feelings towards Valentine are a mess. Very wary and suspicious of him but also finds comfort in Valentine's own certainty in himself
-Kit's parents. ROSEMARY. Now I need to know what happened for Kit to not have been brought up by her

This one is dark. The part about the lost Herondale is fascinating especially if you have read the dark artifices series. The parts about Celine and Steven are just simply dark. I never liked Celine because of her relationship with Steven and the fact she displaced Amatis. Do not read this book if you still want to dislike her. She is an unfortunate, damadged girl who you can't help but pity. This story showcases how Valentine had such a huge following. He made each person feel special and he knew them all well enough to know exactly what was needed to bring people over to his side.

Now this, I really enjoyed. We learned that the Tobias Herondale line is half Shadowhunter and half FEY. Holy. What I want to know is how this affects Kit and everything. Super interested in this plot.

Also my memory of the whole Circle-Stephen-Celine-Amatis drama is a little hazy but I though Celine was a very intriguing character, and very well written as well. And we see once again how charming and manipulative Valentine was.

2.5 stars

0.5 stars because of Jem and Tessa (which was only a short scene). 2 stars because the thing overall was okay, kind of boring but kind of entertaining, but also, the Circle members are all a bunch of morons and assholes.

"We always have a choice. It's not always the choice we would want, but it's a choice nonetheless. The past happens to us. But we choose our future."
