I’ve watched 40 films in the first 2+ months of 2021 so I thought I’d catch up with my reading while I’m ahead with the films.

Only problem is after reading 18 books, this is the first one I came across so far that made me wanna quit out of boredom.
Having a kindle helped a lot, I have it with me at all times instead of scrolling on social media aimlessly I pick it up to continue reading my book.

Not with this one tho.
40% in and I had to push myself to finish it before starting another one cause I knew I’d never pick it up again.
I didn’t connect with it. The characters were not realistic enough, conversations were long and meaningless and entire scenes were filled with unnecessary stuff just to fill up pages.. also I don’t like the "I’m dead inside and my heart is cold, I can’t feel love" trope.
I really don’t understand what people see in this, maybe I’ll take a brake from romance and read something else next.

Okay so I’ve pushed up to 43% but seriously I’m done there’s no point.
I’m DNFing this, not gonna bother anymore.

okay, so this was more like 2.5 stars but still. underwhelming, me thinks.

rhi has severe trust issues, and rightfully so. but i think, for most of the book, she was too cruel and too harsh on samson. he was able to explain himself once, with a very valid reasoning for not keeping in touch while she held onto any reason to not believe him. but when her story was out there, samson immediately believed her and worked with her as best he could.

their love is hella unbalanced, if you ask me. but it's still cute, so yeah.

I was teetering between a 3 and a 4 but the end was so cute, I bumped it up. I liked that I cared about these characters' storylines individually, and not just whether or not they were going to end up together.

This book is not just a romance story.

It's got topics such as sexism in the workplace, racism, physical and mental illness, makshift families, biological families and the conflict of disliking the things they do but loving them anyway, walking the path from friends with benefits to a relationship, forgiveness, becoming unwitting heroes, trust issues, finding a purpose in life, death and grieving, the unavoidable impact of internet on lives, the power of speaking up, and so much more.

The writing is good and fastpaced. The dialogues are impactful and enjoyable. No useless tags and prose to bog it down.

But somehow it was less than the sum of its parts.

I was expecting something that this book just couldn't deliver. And not for the fault of the author or anything. It was simply because of who the characters were.

On paper, Rhi seems so relatable, especially since I mentioned all the things above that she's dealing with and I'm sure almost every woman no matter what country she lives in, deals with too.

But I just couldn't emotionally connect with her, like I'd expect to in a romance novel, and I think it's because she wasn't emotionally available until like the last couple of chapters.

The book did end on a positive note and a hint at vulnerability, so that's a positive for Rhi and Samson's relationship, which probably controversial, but imho had very little chemistry.

Overall a decent book. But I think I'm going to take a break from romance for a while now haha.
