A perfect short-story starter for any Vonnegut Virgin.

As a collection of short stories it’s hard to hold this high or under a chopping block. I think if you like a little bit of everything this book probably has it for you. A beautiful gateway book to how an author writes and what they could come up

The first collection of Kurt Vonnegut's short stories was generally hit or miss for me. What I love so much about Vonnegut's novels is both the characters and how they relate to the absurdity that surrounds them. In these smaller spaces, Vonnegut does not always have enough room to breath on that front. He occasionally does in stories like "Welcome to the Monkey House" and a few others, but for the most part, it feels like a departure from his previous work (even though some of the stories were written before those works came out). He never loses his wit though, and that I will forever love. He also doesn't shy away from his humanistic tendencies either, in particular a story that stuck with me beyond the one the book was named after was "D.P." It didn't really have the normal Vonnegut absurdity or satire, and I think that's what drew my attention to it. It is about people, children in that case, and how we relate to one another. Overall, the collection is worth reading because it gives you a taste of Vonnegut in a multitude of settings you don't normally get in his novels. Even though there were a few duds in the collection, don't let that keep you from picking it up and giving it a shot.

I listened to the audiobook. Some was sublime, much was very good, much was not that good. The first CD-- maybe the first five or so stories?-- was by far the best. One meaningfule xception included a young boy in an apartment and a radio. Very glad I listened to the whole thing. it was a quite nice car experience.
