It's not bad at all, it just mirrors his standup show very closely. If you haven't watched it on Netflix, recommend, if not, do not bother.

I recently watched Mike Birbiglia’s “Old Man and the Pool” live at Kingsbury Hall. It was a magical evening and I told my husband that it was my favorite Birbiglia of all time. He still was partial to “The New One” and so I watched the New One again on Netflix. I laughed and laughed, however I still think “Old Man and the Pool” was the best, but seeing it live (and within the last couple of weeks) gives it an automatic leg up. If you haven’t seen Mike Birbiglia live, stop what you are doing and go buy tickets. After you see the show, read the book and I promise you will love it.

I didn't plan on reading this book and I'm not even sure how I heard about it, but it was so beautiful that it's one of my favorite this year. Part of that it because I just became a dad, so I'm a little biased. I read it up late at night watching over my daughter as she slept and I highly recommend it for any new parent. It covers what those first few months are like with breathtaking honesty and masterful craft. It's funny and sad (a "dark joy"), like the best things.

Incredibly honest and incredibly beautiful at the same time. I think anyone who wants to be a dad or who doesn't want to be a dad but is one should read this book. Actually, everyone should. And watch the show, too.

This was soooooo funny. And so relatable, real and raw. I wanted to read so many parts out loud to my husband, my mom, my friends. I want to read it again. J. Hope Stein's poetry had me in tears, specifically the poem about weaning. I can't stop thinking about it. The two of them must be and should be so proud of this beautiful thing they created together.

An honest, raw look at the uncomfortable transition from being a husband, to being a dad. Birbiglia's comedic timing from stand-up, transitions well through his writing. J. Hope Stein's poetic contributions to, The New One, offer something rarely seen in a memoir; the other story. This "other story" offers more honesty and insight to Birbiglia's voyage.
