I really adored this book as a child. I remember that this was one of the many books that I got from those monthly book-order catalogs that children get in grade and middle school in America. I must have bought at least 500 books through those things, but this one I can really remember. I was so enamored with the cover, that I began to read it as soon as a I got it (thank goodness my teacher was smart enough to give out the books at the end of the school day!)

And then, as soon as I started reading about the way the west used to be, with wild horses and huge ranches and all that comes with, I was in love with the story.

I'm sure that if I reread the book these days I'd be completely bored with it (and could read through it in 30 minutes or less), but there is a sentimental place in my 8-year-old heart for this book.

It's one of the few books that feature horses that I actually like as well! Go Star! Go earn your freedom!

(On a side note, I believe that Disney's Spirit: Stallion of the Cimaron borrowed heavily from this book! Or something like that!)

After reading a couple of Marguerite Henry's horse books, the simpler language in this one was a letdown for me. My seven year old liked the story, but thought it was too short.
