I liked Bella a lot more in this book (relief), and the ending was satisfying (sigh). Though I've always been conflicted about this series and could write an article about what I hope young teens don't learn from it, I have to admit that Meyer has the ability to keep me turning the pages as fast as I can, which is good because then I'm reading too fast to analyze her writing. And because of the enthusiasm it has created in so many, it's been even more fun to talk about it than it was to read it.

I’m genuinely so upset by how much I enjoyed (most of) the Jacob section of this book. It’s unfortunately still twilight and has the same problematic foundation, but for a brief, shimmering moment there’s also a semblance of a good horror narrative. It seriously made me wonder why Stephanie Meyer bothered with romance. The body horror is off the charts.

Having Bella do a complete 180 with her personality and life goals was unsettling, especially since it seems like this was just done to support a bizarre pro life narrative.

This book is unhinged on so many levels. There’s a cuckolding plot line, grown men falling in love with toddlers, and way more casual racism than the rest of the series.

This book was also had the least gay moments in the series, but was the most queer narrative overall. I like to joke that breaking dawn part 1 is my favorite accidental lesbian horror movie (hear me out). Having to be convinced to get married and then having your pregnancy immediately tear you apart from the inside, kill you, and leave behind a monster you don’t recognize as yourself. And then getting mentally frozen for all of eternity in the aftermath?? Vampire stories are generally queer as hell, but the marriage and pregnancy horror in breaking dawn paint a nightmarish picture of compulsory heterosexuality.

Personally, I couldn’t imagine being frozen at 19 before I knew I was a lesbian, tragic!
