The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket

Lemony Snicket is darkly charming. He has the stylings similar to Roald Dahl--dark humor, orphans, mean adults abusing their power over children, and witty children.

The children are charming and quirky but not in any overstated way. His characters are endearing and his prose has more magic to it than many of Dahl's books--fortunately for Dahl, the movie versions of his books were given layers of warmth that were never part of his personality. Snicket, on the other hand, creates a series of unfortunate happenings that get beyond mischief to a person's heart.

It is a pleasure to enter the imagination of Lemony Snicket. I look forward spending another dozen books-worth of time in his clever, and "unfortunate" mind.

A marvelous tragic story!
It's definitely a rollercoaster of emotions and feel right from very first page till the very last line of the book.
Eagerly awaiting to start the next one in the series.

P.S. I am reading this books for the first time. This series probably got released when I was in my middle school, never heard of it back then....until recently thanks to booktube and am glad, cause I might not have enjoyed and cherished reading it so endearingly as I am doing now in my 30's.

I feel sneaky and somewhat guilty because my partner and I were supposed to be reading this series together, but it’s been sitting at my bedside while I stare at it longingly. I couldn’t resist. After finishing I am excited to re-read with them and move onto the second book but I also am acutely aware why this series spooked me so much as a child to the point where I abandoned ship.
