My sister has been trying to get me to read this for years and I finally set aside the time to do it! It’s a heart warming (and wrenching) story for middle-readers that explains more about humanity and compassion than it does donkeys, but it’s beautiful as presented from the innocence of young children. Definitely worth reading!

There are not as many novels for this age group (10-12ish) about WW1 as there are about WW2. This one is beautiful and a great read for any child studying this time period or who enjoys historical fiction. It follows a soldier who has been shell shocked and suffering psychosomatic blindness. He has deserted the front lines and is hiding in the woods in France, where some children find him. This does not shy away from the horrors of war, but keeps it at a level appropriate for children (there is one scene on the battlefield that parents may want to preread if they have very sensitive children). The characters are realistic and relatable. The fables told within the story are charming and add depth to the main body of the story. Highly recommend.
