The last book from Greig Beck that I have read, Gorgon, was a bit of a disappointment. I would say that this one is more on track. I definitely enjoyed it more than Gorgon. Alex Hunter is not present in this one though which I guess can be both good and bad given the last book. I would have liked Alex to be in it but, at least, we get the next best thing in the form of a certain female Israeli agent.

This is a fairly enjoyable thriller / horror mix. It is definitely fantasy. In general it is well written and I do like that, unlike in the last book, there is no silly attempt to put a scientific spin on the more far out elements of the story. For example the fact that the book is able to induce physical pain etc. in people reading it, that is left as a supernatural mystery and that is a good thing as far as I am concerned.

The book moves at an acceptable pace and the pure horror sequences where the Old Ones’ servants manifests itself as re interleaved with the investigatory parts where Matt and company tries to track down the reason for the sinkholes and, ultimately, the book. As I said, it is generally well written although as few stupidities seems to stick out. Like for instance why they bothered to drag the useless bike through the desert and why Matt did not really tell anyone about his visions, especially the one at the gate to the Old Ones’ domain.

As I wrote above a generally well written and enjoyable horror/thriller. Not wow-great but good entertainment.

This book grabs you from the outset and keeps your interest. Sadly it feels very rushed at the end. It almost feels like the author must keep his word count under a limit and rushes to finish the story. Way too much happens (and way too fast) in the last 25 pages.
