A chef in town is cooking gourmet for the homeless population. But what's that meat in the soup?

I love cannibal stories, especially when people are eating human meat and are unaware, so I already thought this book was fun. There a few cringe-worthy scenes and it's entertaining.

The one thing I didn't like is that we, the reader, never found out why the chef chose the demographic he chose. It was very specific but I guess turned out to be unimportant.

Imagine a gourmet chef, running a soup kitchen for those in need. Rather than serving whatever foods that are easily and inexpensively available to them, they provide gourmet soups. They keep the cost down by accepting donations of produce that retailers would otherwise throw out to make room for newer produce.
It all sound wonderful. But these are not vegetable soups. They are in fact the furthest thing from it. And where, you ask, does the meat come from?
You don't want to know.
We follow the staff, a couple who were just out for a night of fun when the unthinkable happens and a dogged reporter who goes rogue, just to find things are much, much more horrifying than her wildest dreams could have predicted.
Gruesome and well plotted, with such fleshed out characters and vivid description, I adored this story and look forward to reading more by Mr. Essig in the future.

Thank you to the author for providing a review copy.
Broth House is my favorite kind of extreme horror novel. It is exceptionally well-written, with plenty of gore and ick factor, as well as enjoyable characters you want to root for and very nasty villains. This was my first Robert Essig book, but it definitely won't be my last.
