Post-apocalyptic games in a tiered society where it's all a lie? Ok, done this before.
Reverting to absolute barbarity to get a respectable position in corrupt system? Alright.
A bit of Darwin & eugenics? Umm ok, I can work with this.
The unexpected turns definitely pushed this rating from 4 to 5 stars. I especially liked how we started out in the mines, tragedy, then boom---new layer for the world, for Darrow. This wasn't some play by play of watching the hero win every battle, he has some pretty rough times among his own comrades. To top it off, things get worse when he discovers bias among the Proctors. Throw it all our on its head and it changes again. I began the book expecting a story of alowly hero overthrowing the system like every other damn YA novel from the past few years, and thank god it isn't another one of those. The villains are meaner, the friends are crueler, the stakes are higher. Things get brutal.
Favorites? Mustang, Sevro, dead horse strategy.
The only stagnant points were right after the first half of the book, when it becomes mostly tactics and description.

Ugh, no. Hate the writing style and the main character is insufferable. An intriguing premise isn't enough to make up for those two things.
