Book 📖: 4/5 stars
Audiobook 🎙️: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Three takeaways:
• Goosebumps meets Coraline meets Paranorm in this middle grade horror book
• loved the 🌈 representation
• emojis that fit this book: 🌈🌳🦟👻🐱❤️
Glad I finally got to finish this book! This is a middle grade fantasy horror with LGBTQIA+ representation. I decided to read this book for a Story Graph challenge. I was unsure about reading well below my level but this book was actually pretty good!
I found the story creative and exciting to read. There's some twists and turns that for me were predictable but for a younger audience would be unexpected. I think it's is also an excellent entry level to horror. I wasn't a goosebumps kid but it's giving that.
Really liked it. Glad I picked this for my reading challenge.

This is a book I am many thoughts about. On the one hand, this has the makings of a classic middle grade fantasy book and I think the protagonist River is quite wonderful. The audiobook reader is also excellent!
But the world and plot feel so superficial, like they crumple up on further inspection. The main driver of the story is a friendship - but that friendship doesn’t really exist. And it’s fine that River wants to save someone, but maybe that friend shouldn’t be someone who gets kidnapped literally the second conversation they have, ever. The Otherwoods is similar. You learn so little about magic and monsters and it’s the whole premise and you just end up with a fairly blank slate by the end of it.
This reads like a perfectly perfunctory book. The plot plays out the way it should, the scenes are all in the correct order. But once you glance in any other direction but River, there’s just not nearly as much to look at.

This is a solid middlegrade horror. I had a lot of fun with this and I thought River was a great MC. I just don't think this book will be super memorable for me.
