Going Dark is a military science fiction story about a sergeant and his doughboys battling aliens in the remains of Utica City. When the cybernetic doughboys begin to malfunction, Sergeant Hoffman will have to find out what's happening all while trying not to get killed.

I'm pretty clearly not the target audience for this story since I'm not overly fond of military SF so it's not super surprising that I didn't particularly like this. There were a lot of terms that were tossed out and never explained and it felt very generic human military vs squid aliens. Definitely not in my top picks for the Nebula but if you like Military SF, it might be more to your taste.

***Going Dark by Richard Fox***

A short story that was nominated for this year's Nebula Award.

I've not read the rest of this anthology. But this story once had a discrete entry, before it got merged with the anthology. *sighs* Anyhow, I've cleared my rating, because it was never supposed to be a rating for that book anyway. But I let my review stand for the one story that I've actually read.

It's a MilSF story with humans and cyborgs fighting an extraterrestrial threat.

The cyborgs, because of their speak patterns, come across as simple-minded. But they'd do anything to protect the lives of their human commanders.

The story seems to be designed to get the reader emotionally attached to the cyborgs. But on that level it didn't work for me.
Which leaves me with a short and unexceptional MilSF story. Not my cuppa.
