This is a collection of short stories and a few essays at the end by a Sicanju Lakota from Rosebud, where my mama-in-law finished her career as a superintendent. I was initially nervous during the first story that it would turn out to be very depressing, but it wasn’t. The Bloomsbury Review wrote, “ ‘Oscar’s Silver Dollar’ is the closest anyone has come to Steinbeck that I can remember,” and I agree except I would put it at the same level (we’ll just forget East of Eden ever existed, blech). The other stories are very nice and the themes are Native resilience, honesty, patience and work ethic. The essays were interesting, on historical and contemporary Native issues, but I wonder why Marshall didn’t site some sources for some of his facts. Altogether a good read on the importance of hearing the Native voice in our history lessons and how it applies to today.
