I enjoyed parts of this book, but I kind of felt like I was missing something. It felt like I didn’t know enough history or enough of the mythology to really know what was going on. I also found it hard to concentrate on it, I zoned out and had to go back a lot more than I usually do with audiobooks and often came back to it having forgotten what had happened in the last chapter.

I really liked Herla and Æffelburg’s characters and their relationship. I liked the wildness of Herla, the fact that she was untamed and kind of feral from being the leader of the hunt for so many years.

I liked the wildness of Herla, the fact that she was untamed and kind of feral from being the leader of the hunt for so many years. Æffelburg also had this untamed aspect of her, refusing to fall in line with the expectations that the men of her court had for her.

I was also really surprised and pleased by the asexuality representation.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Cross posted to thewhisperingofthepages.co.uk

I liked this book insofar as I generally enjoy feminist mythology retellings. However, this book sadly lacked the lyrical beauty and deep relationships that made Holland's Sistersong a five star read for me. I loved Sistersong so much that I'll definitely pick up more of Holland's books, but I hope they're closer to  Sistersong than they are to this one.

I recieved this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and unfortunately found myself in a slump as a result, unsure of how to review this book.

I wanted to like Herla, Ine and Æthelberg’s story, I was very interested in the shift in scenery from trendy Greek mythological fantasies to an era not often seen. However, I found the author’s very obvious love for the time period shifted this story into academic territory heavy with purple prose, making it hard to connect with the characters the whole way through. It took multiple tries to finish this book because it was too easy to put down, despite the sapphic nature of the novel, I just couldn’t connect as deeply as I wanted to.

Despite Song of the Huntress’s faults, the promise and potential is there, and I would recommend it for someone who wants a winding story with sapphic elements.
