This was a bit more of an interesting read. I had to read this for my HIST447 course, and I didn't hate it. This time period is not one of big interest to me, but this told its story in an interesting way. It was easy to read and understand, it wasn't a daunting task like many history books can be. Overall it was too bad.

A powerful, must read book. There are persuasive counterpoints to some of Mr. Herbert's assertions, I'm sure, but his book is still a clear call to lift up all of our society, not just the fortunate few.

At times touching and alarming, this book walks readers through a focused list of American ills, including the education sector, the military world (with a nice profile of a soldier seriously wounded in Kandahar), finance, and infrastructure. Sections on education were interesting given that the author is the anti-reformer (not a fan of Michelle Rhee, charter schools are bad, etc). Often seemed I was just reading one side of the story, not often balanced perspectives with what was happening, so three stars.
