I have wanted to read this one since it came out, so I am so glad to finally get around to it. I was already a huge fan of Barton’s and Tate’s, so I had high expectations, and Whoosh! met all of them: interesting, humorous, beautifully illustrated, and informative. Lonnie Johnson is another brilliant mind that I am so happy there is a book about, and his story shows the genius and hardships behind any type of invention.

Love Barton and Tate's collaborations. This one makes me want to be back in the library putting this in kids' hands. They all need to read this book. The need to see another image of a scientist.

What a wonderful way to teach how a simple toy that's used every summer got it's start!

What an awesome story!!! I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to early/mid elementary school students and parents. I also loved the author's note about where the inspiration for writing this book came from and I love how this book brings to light a nice overview of the life of an extraordinarily inventor. I don't think I know a soul who hasn't played with a super soaker before.

This would be great to read during STEAM Club during the summer and then have a special water fight outside!

This book is a celebration of creativity. It's also a challenge to our typical idea of what a scientist looks like. First off, we don't see many African Americans in young non-fiction relating to science. We also don't necessarily see them carrying around toys. This is sure to intrigue young readers. Scientists are often seen as old white men in lab coats in labs and may not look too exciting. This book lets readers know there is more than one kind of scientist out there. Readers get to see the young Lonnie Johnson already learning, experimenting and imagining his future. I loved this one and can't wait to see how students respond to this great book.

Lonnie Johnson has been interested in how things work since he was a small kid. Throughout his life he's been surrounded by opportunities to solve important challenges. He honed his problem solving abilities as he taught himself how to build rockets, build robots, and make rocket fuel. His ability to solve problems sustained him through countless ups and downs in his career. This is a great book for kids interested in invention.

This is a short biography on the inventions of Lonnie Johnson, the inventor who created the Super Soaker. I love how this started with Lonnie's childhood and interests and showed how he had to face failure before success could happen. Great story of perseverance, connects to AL history, and has great representation!
