The basic premise is of space exploration by Earth residents.  After finding that the civilized life on Mars had starved to death before Earthlings could make it there, the explorers don't expect to find other intelligent life in the Universe.  When they arrive at the planet Vega, the explorers find themselves attacked, almost blown out of space.  They struggle to get away, but the ship crashes on the planet with three of their crew dying horribly in the engine room.

Meeting the intelligent people who live there is the first shock. The second is dealing with the probability of never leaving the planet due to the engine damages. The third is the return of one of the dead crew that they had buried.

I listened to the audio version to be found on YT, but this is also available for free through Gutenberg.org if you're interested.  I had to adjust when I started listening as the reading was very melodramatic, typical of books in this period.  (The book was first published in 1942.)  It was mildly entertaining, I suppose, but I'm not certain that I could recommend it.  I mean, why would you attempt to lie to a telepath?  Seriously?
