I'm done with preteens saving the world while thinking and acting and talking like adults. I can't suspend my disbelief anymore.

I just want more Magnus Chase, man.

This was a really great second installment of this series. I enjoyed it more than the first one (largely because it had much less setup, and I was a fan of new characters like Walt and Bes), and I’m definitely looking forward to reading the conclusion!

I’m gonna be honest, I had a hard time staying as invested in the story with this one. I think it may have just been too tricky for me to follow along with the audiobook unless I was listening fully. But then again, I didn’t have that problem with the first book, so I’m not really sure if it was a me problem or story problem! Either way, this book had quite a cliffhanger and I’m looking forward to wrapping up this trilogy.

Side note: the Author’s Note at the end was a nice touch.

The Kane siblings continue their fight against Chaos by attempting to bring the great god Ra back. Apophis is starting to break free from his prison in the Duat, and the Kane siblings are counting on Ra to stop him.

Another fun book, lots of events, plot twists that I both did and did not see coming, and great new side characters. I appreciated the introduction of more Egyptian gods and goddesses into the story. The stakes were high and the battles were fought fairly easily just like in the first book, but I appreciated the addition of some actual stakes/loss in this book. It really showed that bad things could and would happen, which I felt like was kinda missing from the first.

I thought that Sadie and Carter got a lot more development and unique traits in this book, which I appreciated. I definitely like Sadie more, and I hope to see more improvement for Carter in the next book. The side characters really held this book up though.

However, I was not as big of a fan of the potential love interests for the Kanes. Carter being hung up on Zia was a little annoying because he expected someone who had never met him to like him as much as basically his imagined version of her did. Like I get it would be traumatizing and it is difficult to judge him for but it was frustrating that he projected those expectations on Real Zia literally the moment they met. Also the Sadie-Anubis-Walt love triangle thing was not my favorite, especially because I know how it gets resolved. Another thing that annoyed me was the depiction of Ra. It’s tricky to show him as weaker than his former self but I don’t know if making his mental state a constant punchline was the best way to do it. But yknow it is a book for children and I don’t know how I would’ve personally done it.

Overall it was a really fun book but I probably would’ve enjoyed it if I thought a little less. I did like it better than the first though but I rated it the same because -1 for the love triangle stuff that got on my nerves.

I will love everything Riordan does. It's pretty much guaranteed at this point.

Great read

Once again I'm not disappointed. The adventure and visuals painted are so entertaining. Can't wait to start book 3.
