This was a very pleasant read, although it has no plot to speak of. If you read The Mezzanine - this is quite similar. An easy book to pick up, put down, pick up later ... each chapter is an isolated moment in time. Quiet fireside musings about life, parenthood and duck ownership.

Beginning each chapter with 'Good Morning,' Baker muses about life, death, routine, and family. Despite its shortness, the novel can become monotonous in a negative way. Yet, there are still moments of laughter, sadness, and joy which make the read interesting and memorable.

definitely excellent writing, but most books like this that don't really have a plot just leave me thinking "yeah, that was good, just good" and that's how I feel about this

I just loved the feel of this book. I kept having to check the cover to make sure it was actually written by Nicholson Baker! I felt as if I was there with the main character - making the coffee, lighting the fire...thinking about my life as he was.

There is such a thing as using too many metaphors and too much imagery. This book is the perfect example. Aside from not really having a plot, it was hard getting over the half page description of the hole in his sock.

Miraculous. Nicholson writes the kind of passages that'll mean you never eat an apple or look at leaves the same way again
