They Came Like Swallows by William Maxwell

Goosebumps. One of the best representations of the internal world of children I've read. You know what's coming but it's still a shock. A portrait of domesticity and tradgedy.

For me, this is better than So Long, See You Tomorrow. But YMMV.

Beautiful short little book. I found the first two parts — from Bunny and Robert — more compelling than the last part from James. Hard to believe Maxwell published this when he was 29. Felt like the right time to read it: the kind of book you can finish in one day, and it can stay with you for much longer.

Hard to categorise because this is quite different from my usual. I was expecting it to be hypermasculine nostalgia for American boyhood stuff, and it is a little bit (also includes unsurprising racism-as-aside), but oddly enough it reminded me the most of Rosamund Lehmann's Invitation to the Waltz. All very internal, and I was impressed by the careful sketch of the kids' minds, the attention to mood. Doubtful about a book that's about a woman but has nothing of her own perspective -- viewed as mother and wife -- but on the whole I liked it and I thought it was done well and touchingly.
