An absolute stunner of a comic. This bind-up contains the first 5 issues of The Wicked + The Divine, a comic series about 12 gods who arise every 90 years, have a life span of 2 years and in this era decide to spend their time on stage, living it up as pop/rock stars. It tracks 17-year-old-uber-fan Laura, who wishes she too were a God (even if it meant dying before her 20th birthday!) and how she ends up getting mixed up with Lucifer (aka Luci) after attending the concert of a sun god, Amaterasu.

The art work is incredible - just my cup of tea and reminds me heavily of Fiona Staples work (the genius behind Saga). I particularly love the shift into pop art whenever one of the mischievous gods performs a 'miracle'.

The storyline draws you in, making you keen to solve the puzzle of the initial plot (I won't spoil this for you) as well as popping up side questions all the time - like why are the gods only allowed a 2 year life span? There seems to be hundreds of gods, but only 12 appear every 90 years, how do the gods decide who will emerge? Why does Ananke need to keep so strictly to her rules of secrecy? And why is there a chance the resurrections could suddenly stop?

Also the character building is superb - I actually care about these guys and gals! The gods are believable, child like, flawed, careless and care free. What I would imagine immortal, powerful beings to be like.

I simply can't wait for the next instalment (Giant cheshire cat smile).

Maldita sea, me hypearon! El dibujo mola bastante, pero la historia de momento es un poco rara, aunque promete.

This is so right up my alley that it's making me sick with joy. Basically, gods get reincarnated, they have a lot of rules they hold their own kind to and their appearances dazzle the world (and definitely dazzled me), this time having them in modern times.
I saw mixed reviews for this comic and I was a little bit weary as I started it, but oh gods! I'm a total sucker for various gods, how they're worshipped and all the details of their cult, I just find it a very captivating subject. I also am a total sucker for modern settings in which you incorporate ancient beings, so this book was double combo of interests for me. And I am so glad, because it's been done so good - the gods, living up to the expectations and adoration of their fans and world, their various ways of getting worshippers or treating them, the how tos of magical beings faced with technology and subways and a city that could eat you up alive-, this whole comic is a testament of great minds at work. I swear, if you too like these things, then you will also most likely enjoy this comic too.
I loved the characters. There's still a lot of mystery left to be solved, really, the plot barely thickens at the end of this volume and I am so so excited to know some more about the colorful and intriguing set of gods we have right now, about the young girl who is ready to give up anything if only to prove herself worthy of loving each and one of them. I don't know, I am just filled with love for this comic and what it offers, it was such a great read and it fitted my personal tastes so well that I'm kind of tearing up thinking about it.
And the artwork!! I've read Young Avengers and the art is really similar, but I can't complain because it is absolutely gorgeous! There is such a pretty use of colors and they add so much more to the story and the atmosphere of the whole read. Also, the volume comes with some extra art at the back and I wasn't expecting that and I was so giddy!! so excited!! very early christmas to me!!
I really think the next volumes will probably be even more interesting. And yes I am well aware I'm basically writing this incredibly excited review because I simply love gods and modern settings. I know, but I have no chill about this subjects.

Couldn't put this one down. I read it straight through during breaks at work - so an hour and half. The art is clean and bright but also evocative. I absolutely fell head over for Lucy... but then, didn't everybody?

Imagine picking up just this book and falling head-over-heels for a character who
gets her head blown up at the end
. This is why I need to change my comic reading habits; from now on we wait for the omnibus.

I really enjoyed the artwork and the personalities of all the gods. There was only one scene where I was REALLY confused, but a quick Google search for the deity's name helped clear that up. The ending was so good. I can't wait to get the next volume.
