Super funny and clever because you know every student is probably thinking there is someone at their school that is a witch.

With equal parts humor and artistry, I found myself falling in love with Grunhilda, The Lunch Witch.  What's a witch to do when she's run out of business?  Her belt is getting tighter and she has some familiars to take care of.  She needs a job--and fast!  So when a lunch lady position opens up at the local elementary school, she finds herself applying for it.  After all, what's better than poisoning today's youth with disgusting mixtures of mystery meat and slop for lunch?  Her job is going well until she suspects a young girl to know that she's actually a witch, and she absolutely cannot be found out.

I just love the art style--it's perfectly messy and polished when it matters, making for a fun and tumultuous style that fits fantastically with the story's style of something just out of the ordinary.  Moreso, I absolutely LOVE the color choice.  What better color choice than a monochrome color palette of putrid greens?  The color of (racially-insensitive) witches and lunchtime stew!

Even the storyline was something fun and adorable.  When a young girl needs help to raise her failing grades, she asks Grunhilda for a potion to make her smarter.  Grunhilda is obliged to help only because she's been found out--but her witchy ancestors aren't too pleased with her using her powers and the grimoire for good!  And so chaos ensues.

Overall, this was a fun, funny, and pleasant read perfectly blending the mix of the occult, humor, and school life.  After all, how many middle graders can relate to a lunch lady?  But Lucke manages this melange with a clever hand.  Definitely worth a read!!

I am doing a deep dive into middle grades graphic novels in hopes of expanding our school collection. The Lunch Witch was very cute, and a good story about an evil witch who starts to have not-s0-evil feelings about a student when she takes a job as an elementary school lunch lady.

If we had this in our collection already I would keep it, and I think it would circulate, but I wasn't impressed enough to buy it new.

A sweet story about a witch who can't make a living in the modern world, as no one believes in magic anymore. She takes a job as a school lunch lady. She is torn between her ancestors expectations for her to use magic for evil and her current position in public schools, where appropriate behavior is the model.
Very silly.

Read this for #MGLit readathon. It's a cute middle grade graphic novel about a witch who loses her job and finds a job at an elementary school as a lunch lady. It was cute and I did chuckle a few times. There are also some gross parts as well.

This is a great tale for young readers, although I must admit the art is off-putting to those kids raised on bright animations. My kiddo certainly didn't want to read it. A shame, since I found it delightfully dark and funny and full of subversiveness.

Quirky GN about a witch that gets a job as a cafeteria worker.
The style is key here - and not super accessible, as cool as the stained-looking pages might be. More niche than I expected. But those page treatments are awesome!
