The audiobook narration was top notch. I loved the duet format and the voice actors were so good. That said this book had flaws. I would describe this book as a variation of the magic in Mistborn meets the romance in ACOTAR + a sprinkle of From Blood and Ash but in a not good way.

At 20% I was intrigued by the magic albeit slightly annoyed at the FMC for her overconfidence.

By 40% I was fully invested in the MMC and finding out more albeit more annoyed at the FMC for her arrogance.

By 60% I forgot my annoyance because I was so intrigued at what would come next.

At 80% It was a dumpster fire and I was annoyed at everyone and everything because why did we need to go into such stereotypical tropes!! UGH!!

At the end I was just mad.

Overall Rating: 3.5/5. I do think I’ll read the next one but the end was really giving me From Blood and Ash vibes (which I despised).

TW: sexual situations (M/F), explicit language (a lot), drugs, alcohol, violence, death, child death, vomiting

Listened to the audiobook on a whim. While I admit the voice acting definitely affected my rating, I will say I was immersed in the world-building and the unfolding of secrets and events. I am most pleased by the wit and humor from the characters, and how they bounce off each other.

My only true disappointment was Danya. I hate to see women be called bitches or be talked down to, even in my fiction (because fuck misogyny always), but she truly was despicable. And I just don't understand why. I don't see what she added to the story, at least not yet, but I hope we get more female fae that are strong and badass and sure, with a wicked temper, but know how to regulate themselves when the situation demands it. Why were the men able to keep themselves in check and not Danya? Just thinking about it pisses me off. You reap what you sow, but I think some of Danya's ire was founded, and she didn't deserve to be made out as a random asshole that had no personality and a shitty attitude always.

Aside from that though, I really enjoyed the story. Especially the world-building. I'm intrigued by just how long-lived the fae are, and what other customs there are. I'm looking forward to book two :D

The main characters were absolutely insufferable. I made it halfway and just the thought of another 10 hours listening to them just filled me with dread. The opening was very reminscent of Dune so I was very confused how the fairies fit in. When she's kidnapped and brought to the fey world, she has a magic power that hasn't been seen for hundreds of years. But she winds up locked in a blood oath to a half-mad fey lord to help the fairies win a war on their world. They spend all their time talking about how much they hate each other and how badly they want to fuck. Forced proximity is not a favorite genre of mine and this one was just too much "f*ck you!" "Gladly" over and over again. I'm exhausted by it

I wound up skimming most of this book...not because I wanted to know what happened or that I cared about the characters, but rather to try to see what the hype was about. I feel like the lore/background of the story was lacking and there wasn't really great explanations for how the world is structured or the plot background. I also did not like the "romance" as it didn't develop over time (like the FMC and MMC hate each other, actually get to know each other or have circumstances that they learn they're a good match then fall in love) like advertised, and it was instead  "they're a fated pair, trust me, they love each other!" When the only evidence and building for this love was physical attraction and sexual encounters. I also didn't like the addition of vampires/fae who drink human blood - it felt random to me and adds to my point that the central plot is kind of jumbled and a mess. The writing style also bothered me. The FMC continuously saying "modern teen movie" monologues like "Was this a bad idea? Yes, yes it was. I'm doing it anyways!" just really annoyed me especially in a fantasy novel.
