Many pearls and usable concepts wrapped up in hyperbole and sexist language

I generally like his concepts and simple systems, and dislike his indifference to self-care, balance, or any form of work that is not a classic corporate climb.

Worth a read but a big struggle in some parts

This is an amazing manual for how self discipline is important in all aspects of your life if you wanna thrive. It delves into attitudes we may have without noticing, and advises habits that can really change your life once you start doing it. Thank you, Mr. Tracy!

This book should be the posterchild for the idea that not everyone needs to write a book. Especially in the self-help world, it needs to be a lot more normalized that finding personal success does not automatically bestow upon a person the right to publish something (or start another cookie cutter podcast for that matter). This is an extremely, extremely horribly written book that was probably meant as nothing but a simple cash grab. From the poorly formulated structure, to the shallow advice and barely done research (beyond personal anecdotes – i.e. this worked for me, and therefore, I see no reason why it shouldn’t work for the rest of the population), it is clear that the author put no effort or care into the formulation of this book beyond hitting a page count and slapping his name on it, with the intention of adding another income stream to his name. For example, the author writes –

“We immediately sat down with our children and told them, “From now on, always tell the truth. We promise you that you will never get into trouble for telling the truth. If you tell a lie, we will be upset, and you will be punished. But if you tell the truth, you will always be okay with us.” From that day onward, with few exceptions, our children “tried us out” with the truth. Over time, they got into a habit of telling the truth, no matter what it was. And we kept our promise. We never punished our children for telling the truth.

This is a shallow anecdote that reads as if the author has found an overarching solution to parenthood that works universally 100% of the time, when it infact reads more like Pepsi’s and Kendall Jenner’s infamous solution to racism (IYKYK). Most of the advice presented is similarly over-simplistic. Do you want to lose weight? Oh, just get up and exercise. – No kidding, Sherlock. His advice is skin deep and ignores a lot of consideration on why such cookie advice rarely works for majority of the population and is simply based on the fact that because an idea worked for him, it ought to work for everybody, forgetting the different circumstances, temperaments and resources available to everyone.

Yes, there is some half-baked advice given here and I will admit that upon reading this, you are bound to come away with at least one or two pieces of useful advice (hence the 2-star rating), but the overarching point is that the entire book itself is a waste of time and said one or two pieces of useful advice can be found in so many other places, and perhaps better stated and argued and given in a more nuanced helpful format. Don’t be like me, don’t waste your time with this. Save yourself the effort and seek more thoughtfully crafted self-help resources.

Amazing listen

AUDIOBOOK
Highly recommend if you're interested in learning more about self-discipline! Some parts are laughable (like his chapter on being more efficient at work - don't talk with your co-workers, arrive an hour early, work through your lunch, stay an hour late), but other chapters were super great with practical tips. Definitely going to need to read again and take notes.
