Another awesome book in the GFL series! Absolutely loved the dire situation the Krakens were in, and the way Quentin handled difficult circumstances. Some great twists and surprises in here. Really can't wait to read the next book!

I don't know why, exactly, I love Sigler's GFL books so much, but I do. Can't wait for The All-Pro.

I love this series. Reminds me a lot of the Blood Bowl series done by the Black Library. Lots of great action. Could do with a little less world building and more gridiron action but it's a great, fun read.

Natural continuation of a great book. The whole GFL series is one of my favorites and this sophomore book is brilliant.

(what I noted when I got the book)
I am so very excited to start reading this book (too bad I have so many going right now..sigh) -- I loved The Rookie (although I listened to it on Sigler's podcast before actually having the book)

I got #645 out of 3000 -- yeah for special editions!!

(After I read (okay, I actually listened to the podcast) it, nearly two years later)
So excited that I waited two years to listen to the podcast. I am dumb because the story was AWESOME. I laughed, I cried (seriously), it was just a wonderful story. I look forward to The All-Pro, although I am going to take a little break before starting it.

Great second book in the Galactic Football Series by Scott Siegler. In The Starter, we pick up as the Ioneth Krakens begin their Tier One season, primed to win at least a few games to stay in Tier One and not be demoted to Tier Two. As the season begins, while Quentin Barnes' arm is doing wonders, the Krakens need some offensive line help and a running back who can make things happen.

I'm not not not not a sports fan, but Sigler does a great job of combining a sports movie with a sf story. Perhaps because it is in the sport genre there doesn't seem to be much question whether the Krakens will win the big game at the end (or is there? gotta try and keep this spoiler free), but Sigler overcomes this by making me care about the characters and he is really good a creating head-cracking, ass-kicking galoots! He is also really good at convincing me, a sports ignoramus, of all the smarts that go into being a professional athlete. Add to this plenty of cool alien species and how they all interconnect, physically, socially and politically into the Galactic Football League and I found the book insanely entertaining.

Oh, and I love that as a world building technique Sigler uses all the storytelling practices of real world sport casting. There are little pieces on history and physiology that would fit right in as colour pieces before a big game on the sports channel. Especial favourites are a xenobiologist who sounds like he is almost jacking-off as he describes all the disgusting practices of various sentient beings, and The Greatest Sports Show on Earth (or something like that) which has great comic moments all the while advancing the plot.

Sigler is planning for this to be a seven book series, which may be stretching the formula thin, but for right now this is a terrific second book.
