Ooooh, this is pretty. Sparse text, next to spare aquatint prints. Very nice. Something between Anke Feuchtenberger and Edward Gorey (perhaps like a comic written and drawn by the former, redrawn and packaged by the latter), but still with its own identity. An allegorical, dream-like story, with a female protagonist - I don't want to say more so as not to give too much away, but if that sounds at all appealing then I'd advise you to read this. I took it out from the library, but it's a book I'd be very pleased to have on my shelves.

This is Audrey Niffenegger's first book -- she skteched the illustrations in the early-mid 1980s. I thought the combination of the illustrations and a small smattering of words were powerful. You know when you read a picture book the illustrations almost tell you the story more than the words? This is what happens here.

The story, if there is one, revolves around an unnamed "she" who is created by a scientist and wears only a skirt. Not a book for little kids, here. Her adventures include a foiled marriage, a relationship with Napoleon, giving birth to a cat, and going to a nunnery. These are all supposedly interrelated.

As with The Three Incestuous Sisters, this book was mainly artwork and not your typical book with a plot. But I am glad I read it, and along with 3IS it helped me to understand Niffenegger's macabre sensibilities that really didn't come through in Time Traveler's Wife, and so I wasn't taken by surprise at the tone and ending of Her Fearful Symmetry. Worth a read: order both of Niffenegger's illustrated novels from your library via Inter-Library Loan.

I'm not really sure how to rate this book. It was beautiful and strange.

Okay, this is a book that you can finish in like, 5 minutes?

The story and plot is very random (which was confirmed by Audrey herself in the acknowledgements) and it's just a very simple read. No extravagant storylines or plot twists. It's more like a bedtime story for adults with the extra weirdness and unique pictures in each page.

I actually just picked this up my shelf to cure my reading slump and I thank God for making short reads like this available to any reader that wants to narrow down their tbr pile with little effort.

I still found it entertaining despite its lack of depth and development.

You can tell that this was written by an art student: A bizarre story pretending to be deeper than it really is with art that is just, "eh". I'm glad to see that Audrey Niffenegger has grown since writing this book.
