"We Are Okay" is such a heartwarming book! It skillfully touches on our human emotions - grief, loneliness, and healing. The story unravels gently, but authentically, making it easy for us to connect to the themes it explores.
The characters in this book are wonderfully crafted. Each one contributes a unique flavor to the storyline, thanks to their distinct backgrounds and personalities. They come alive in the pages!
The author has a knack for clear and expressive writing. The story flows effortlessly from one scene to the next, making it a pleasure to read. It's a four-star book that will leave an indelible mark on your heart.
The protagonist, Marin, is someone you'll find yourself rooting for. The title "We Are Okay" takes on a poignant significance once you've finished the book. Marin may not be okay right now, but she's on her way there. It takes her a while to come to this realization, but when she does, it infuses the narrative with hope.
I actually cried in the end.  I was angry at Marin’s grandfather, at his lies, at his obsession with “Birdie” and specially how he kept Marin’s own mother from her, the memories, everything, just like she was, but in the end, things were going to be okay, she was going to be okay.

It’s a dark place, not knowing.

It’s difficult to surrender to.

But I guess it’s where we live most of the time. I guess it’s where we
all live, so maybe it doesn’t have to be so lonely. Maybe I can settle into it, cozy up to it, make a home inside uncertainty.

Marin’s mother died when Marin was very young, and she has been raised by her grandfather. When we meet her, though, he is also gone and she is staying on her college campus in New York over holiday break, awaiting the arrival of her best friend Mabel, who plans to visit for a few days. The rest of the story bounces back and forth from the present to the events leading up to the loss of Marin’s Gramps as we slowly discover what has happened and why Marin has been isolating herself and avoiding her past.

I have such tender feelings toward both Marin and Mabel. Their situation is so fragile and tricky and they’re both trying so hard. Young adult fiction is difficult to get right, and I think Nina LaCour really knows what she’s doing.

“I know that I am always lonely, even when surrounded by people, so I let the emptiness in.”
“We are Okay” follows Marin before and after an experience which will change her life forever. Utilizing flashbacks to contrast with present day, Marin tries to reforge a bond with her old best friend Mabel, digging up betrayal and pain throughout the process.
I related to many aspects of the novel, which made it such a compelling read. Grieving was portrayed with such insight, and the relationship dynamics expressed that family can mean more than those who we share blood with. The prose was beautiful as well, which surprised me, because third person narrative is almost always my favorite.”
What bumped down the rating was a few plot holes that were underdeveloped or ignored; but, this novel is character driven so more emphasis was put on emotional  growth.
