Few things in life are as disheartening as being disappointed by a book you thought you'd absolutely love.

The fictional history of a medieval convent, written in the 1940s. A small community of women, whose names it seems you are meant to never be able to keep track of, are trying to be nuns, and some live and some die, some have visions and some are cranky, they get ripped off and misled - even by their own bisop - and mostly they are always about to go bankrupt. It's all very subtle, quietly funny, hardly has a plot, and is mostly about ordinary life. And sexism. Also, since there's no plot, there's also not really an ending. Thankfully, the introduction is helpful in explaining what the heck is going on. Since I can never say no to a book about nuns, I read it all and kind of loved it.
