Wonderful children's story about the Macy's Day Parade. Different outlook on a holiday book. Grades 1-2. Great to pair with Balloons Over Broadway.

Milly and the Macy's Parade by Shana Corey and Brett Hequist
1924 and Milly's father works at Macy's. They miss their country, Poland and they figure out a way to celebrate with others: Thanksgiving holiday and Christmas.
Can't go caroling to everybody in New York City and Milly talks to Mr. Macy with an idea of a parade.
Cute children's story.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Nice story, although I wish the girl hadn't been made up. The illustrations are lovely.

A fictionalized version of the events that led to the creation of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Author's Note at the end explains what pieces were real and what was imagined and why. Perfect text pairing for BALLOONS OVER BROADWAY, and could pair well with LAUNDRY DAY for envisioning the immigrant experience in NYC.

Meh. The illustrations are fun. But it read like a “true story” until the author’s note at the end, which said that basically it was entirely made up- even Mr. Macy was dead before there ever was a Macy’s parade! And yet he’s a character in the book?! Not a keeper.

Loved the idea behind this book and how parts of it are inspired by partly true events. It also includes artwork by the talented Brett Helquist (illustrator of “Series of Unfortunate Events”)

This story is a "not so true" tale of how the Macy's Day Parade came to be. I love Shana Corey for strong female characters, her ability to weave a story I can’t put down, while at the same time, keeping it simple enough that even younger children can enjoy.
Unlike Here Come the Girl Scouts, this story contains little fact and alot of fiction. Which doesn’t make it any less fun… just don’t plan on using it as a non-fiction text.
