4.5

This is a good comic book, right here. Fun, exciting plot; great characterizations; excellent art—it's got it all and then some. Heinberg's writing finds an ideal balance between cliche and natural high school drama, which makes his characters feel natural and distinct even amidst an increasingly out-there storyline. I'll admit to feeling a bit bogged down by some of the time-travel stuff in the first half, and the latter half's more dramatic, intergalactic plot could've used a little more depth in its more emotional moments. But it all works as well as those storylines can hope to work, as Heinberg maintains a firm focus on the young heroes, never losing sight of the interpersonal dynamics that make them so enjoyable and refreshing.

Cheung's artwork is really something, too. He gives the title a quintessentially "superhero" style that makes it abundantly clear early on that this isn't a YA spin-off but a rich experience of its own. His character designs are sharp and memorable, with clever costumes that pop off the page with personality. I especially loved how expressive he draws the characters, which makes Heinberg's already strong dialogue even stronger. And his splash pages, hoo boy, are they great. Dramatic, heroic, bursting with energy and personality—it rules.

I enjoyed this a lot and will absolutely seek out what's next for these characters. It gets a very enthusiastic 4.5 from me.
