I cannot wait to see how the events revealed in this novella come into play with the last book in the trilogy. Oh Hector. You are so swoon worthy!

So I would've given The King's Guard 5 stars but I feel like 4 was more necessary due to my confusion throughout this entire novella. Now don't get me wrong it was still a really awesome, interesting, and well-written but I was just confused in a lot of parts. I hope I get more of these characters in the series because I'm kind of hooked on to their super messy lives. I can't wait to dive into these books now - these novellas really hyped me up.

This is it. Now I'm really done with this series. My heart is breaking a little. This novella strengthened my love and admiration towards Hector's character. It was also interesting to see Rosario's origins and how life in the kingdom was like before the arrival of Elisa. 5/5

Excellent novella, providing some interesting backstory to the series. Now that I've read through all of these, I feel like I'm ready to read Crown of Embers tomorrow.

YES!! Finally a book from Hector's perspective! I really liked knowing how Hector came to be so close with Alejandro and his own adventure before everything else happened.

Before Hector was a the king's personal guard, he was a young boy. This is the story of Hector trying out for the guard and the backstory of King Alejandro. When the queen is sick, Alejandro needs trainee Hector for a secret mission. Hector then must journey with allies that he is not sure he can trust on an important mission to prevent disaster in the kingdom.

It's a short novella, and it's interesting to see some of the backstory of Hector. I have a feeling that he's going to play a much larger role in the second and third books. I had trouble with some of the decision making processes that happened in this book, specifically by King Alejandro, although to be fair, we know from the first book that he's not exactly a great king.

It's an OK read if you want to know more about the story and history behind the series, but I think I much prefer Carson's second series.

My least favorite of the novellas from this series. It’s essentially a “rescue the princess” story. Nothing really special here.
