Semi-cozy and enjoyable although Inspector spends an awful lot of time driving around, back and forth, from place to place.

Lots of driving, back and forth, not my favorite of this series.

Inspector Ian Rutledge is at his best in a mystery, and this woven tale is no exception. Another great installment in a series that I already love. Also, I could -- and do -- happily listen to Simon Prebble (narrator) all day long.

Keep them coming, Charles Todd!

I have read a few of the books in this series and they have grown on me. The time frame is just 100 years ago, after WWI, and it is surprising and sad what the attitude was toward returning soldiers who suffered from "shell shock".

This was a solid historical mystery! While I felt like it was slightly meandering storyline, I ultimately really enjoyed the detective and the overall conclusion. There were so many little details scattered throughout the story, and the setting of post WWI hit all the right notes for me from a historical perspective. I felt the focus on mental health and the stigma that so many soldiers had to face was particularly poignant, and it serves to highlight how far as a society we have come and how far we still need to go.

This is now one if my top fave Inspector Rutledge novels, along with "Legacy of the Dead" and "A Cold Treachery".
I enjoy all of the novels in this series, but some stand out, and this is one. It is well-paced, and keeps you guessing. I would not have guessed how this story turned out.

I would actually give this book a 4.5. I love the Inspector Ian Ruthledge books by Charles Todd and this one is no exception. My recommendation is to read these books in order because of the character development.

1910 Alan Barrington escapes the country after being the main suspect in a murder. Now in 1921 has he been sighted back. Inspector Rutledge is given the cold case to find him and arrest him.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its interesting and likeable main character. Another good addition to this series.
