Leo: A Ghost Story by Mac Barnett

This was a very sweet ghost story that young children will probably enjoy. However, with some children it may prompt questions such as: what is a ghost? are ghosts real? did Leo die? where is his family? You have to think these things through when your children pepper you with questions such as this, so make sure you're prepared for follow-up discussions!

The illustrations and themes of friendship, honesty, and imagination are all great. There is something a little precious about the writing style, but it's not oppressive, just enough to make this more of a one-time read. Timeless text is what keeps me coming back to picture books again and again; the illustrations rarely do so (the illustrations in this one are awesome—I love the use of blue).

Overall, a welcome addition to the gentle Halloween picture book world, but not one I would add to my personal library.

Could be used for my imagination fiction unit, but not sure about the ghost element. Fits nicely in the "nobody wanted me but then I saved the day" trope.

This may turn into a 5 star book if the kid asks us to read it a couple more times...
Very sweet book.

A sweet story about a ghost...not an imaginary friend! Love the concept of this book - reminds me of Casper!

This book is GREAT.  I love children's books, I love friendship, and I love ghosts.  This is a perfect book with which to help me glide into fall.  It is adorable, it's a little left of plum, and it has a heartwarming message of acceptance.  Also, the illustrations are great--especially the first doublespread in which we're introduced to Leo and yet are incapable of seeing him.  And when he finally does appear to us, he's the cutest little illustrated ghost that you've ever seen.  All in all, this is a wonderful read.

The tagline for this book would be "ghosts are people too." Sweet little story.
