This is a real page-turner by that master of the Victorian mystery, Anne Perry. I always enjoy the Monk-Latterly banter, and the plot twists were enjoyable, if not always surprising. I zipped through this book in two days, which isn't often the case. Highly compelling and great fun to read!

Not my favorite but still better than most. It was fun to see the characters deal with their feelings and talk about love. Points deducted for anachronistic attitudes and another whopping coincidence that pulls different stories together.

I love how Anne Perry delves into the hypocrisy of the Victorian area. The way women was treated as possessions and as if they were minors - their total disempowerment. How she pushes us into the dark underbelly of London. But also how she shows us the beauty of the art, architecture and fashion.

And of course she keep me up past midnight again and again with her stories and mystery. The sneaky lady had me thinking I knew what the plot was and when let that part unfold 70 % into the book and takes us on another mystery for the last 30 % of the book. Sneaky and very effective. I am very tired today because I stayed up way past my bedtime to read the end of this book.

A brilliant woman architect, disguised as a man, finds herself engaged to another woman... I think that any other author would have made that plot a comedy, but I didn't even think of laughing until I read that summary.

The subplot with the deformed children was also nicely handled, and dovetailed well with the main one - perhaps a bit too coincidental, but mysteries often are.

How did Dolly lean so much about poisons?

Coincidence plays an even larger role than normal in this book, but you know what, it makes for a good story so screw it, I don't care. Also, I love when Monk goes Victorian Dirty Harry. Also, no spoilers, but the ending is worth an extra star all by itself. I am a sucker for that crap.

It's all thanks to Booksale that I found this masterpiece. I've read this when I was in high school and you should take note that I'm a sucker for detectives and mysteries. (It's probably due to the insane amount of Nancy Drew books and Detective Conan episodes I gobble up) I've forgotten most of the plot but I still remember the thrill I felt when I read this book. A Breach of Promise skirts the story of an architect breaking off his engagement to a prominent woman. Well, that was the main event of course until a murder shifts the spotlight. William Monk is a cynical yet endearing character and it was really breathtaking when the answers were all laid out perfectly in the ending.
