Listened to this on audiobook.

Ms. Christie really said “lives are more important than the chase of aesthetics” let’s sit on that

What I would usually expect from Agatha Christie novels. It's mainly all about learning all the different characters (suspects) and their histories before the drama really starts to pick up. Not as "engaging" as some of her other books, I would say the middle is pretty slow.

To begin with, if the title puts you off (it does me), this is not a creepy or supernatural mystery. The party is merely the setting, and the party itself is kind of old-fashioned and non-freaky. That said, it’s still a darker mystery than some in the Christie canon because it involves children. So proceed with caution depending on your own ability to shelve the tragic events and turn to the puzzle.

I had a good chunk of this one figured out quite early on, although there did turn out to be even more to the solution that I hadn’t seen. I’d be surprised if most readers didn’t grasp at the partial solution almost immediately; the efforts to misdirect are a bit less successful than one is accustomed to from Christie.

I never am disappointed reading a Hercule Poirot novel, but this was just ok to me. Sometimes, with Christie’s novels, I feel like there are so many characters I have trouble keeping track, and this certainly fell under that category.

Honestly, I was not fond of this book that much. The plot was intriguing initially, and I could see the desire to figure out how all the pieces came together. However, it dragged along a lot in many places and didn't keep me hooked through all the conversations.

This mystery felt much darker than the other Poirot’s I’ve read. With the deaths of two children and the killer themselves being cold blooded and harsh, it’s a serious and nail biting race to the finish rather than the suspenseful and slow whodunnit that’s the usual fare. Nevertheless, it was a great spooky read for a spooky time of year.
