I received a copy of Dancing with Our Ancestors by Sara Florence Davidson, Robert Davidson, and illustrated by Janine Gibbons from Highwater Press in exchange for an honest review.

Dancing with Our Ancestors is a story inspired by real experiences of Sara Florence Davidson in which she shares the Haida potlatch that her father and stepmother hosted. The preparations, the guests, the dances and joy of this celebration is told through words and beautiful, vivid illustrations in this picture book.

Dancing with our Ancestors is a beautiful book, full of poetry and history. As Sara Florence Davidson shares her childhood memories of a Potlatch in Hydaburg, Alaska, the reader is invited to be part of the feast and learn the cultural significance of the Haida Potlatch, a once - banned ceremony.

Janine Gibbons’ art is breathtaking. Through her illustrations, we can hear the sound and smell the food, it is extremely lively. I was fascinated by the author’s explanations of the Haida Potlatch, explaining in simple words, but in great detail the course of the ceremony, as well as its many symbols.

Dancing with our Ancestors is an extremely rich book, destined as much for children, than for adults. It is a joyful and emotional celebration of the Haida Culture and Community and an invitation to learn about the Sk'ad'a Principles.
