Longer review likely forthcoming, but in all seriousness, this is one of the best books I've read in a long time, Star Trek or otherwise. Phenomenally well-done. (Particularly from a trauma/PTSD/grief standpoint. Wonderful to see.)

Way too violent, graphic, and gory for me— Trek is a comforting media for me and I wasn’t hoping to see all of my beloved favorite characters die horrific, awful deaths 😰 this book genuinely distressed me, tangibly, and I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who isn’t a hardcore horror/gore fan. Be forewarned on the violence, it’s… a lot. Please take care of yourself and your wellbeing in your consideration of whether you want to read this book.
Edited this review a couple days later to add: I chose to continue reading this book to the end to see how the whole crisis would be reverted a la “year of hell” timeline undo because after a certain point, I felt this would give me a better emotional way to move on from the book rather than cutting it off by stopping the book without knowing how it would end— I’m aware I could’ve chosen to DNF the book, but felt my own compulsions to at least see things be OK in the end— which, by nature of this being a early-seasons ds9 novel, we know going into it that they had to somehow have all the canon characters at least be alive at the end to stay canon-compliant. I chose to see how the story would do so because I felt it would, to quote Kirk, “give me emotional security” to see the (relatively) HEA.

Literally everything I wanted from this book. Good pacing, interesting plot, excellent characterization, snappy distinctive writing style. I laughed, I cried, I snickered -- often within the same sentence.

There are some references to trying to use alcohol to convince someone to have sex, also to people's likenesses being used for holosex programs without their knowledge or consent :( Odo shapeshifts quite a bit, including into some strange forms that could qualify as body horror. One plot point eventually involves an electromagnetic pulse. There isn't technically a fire per se, but several scenes involve extreme heat connected with a reactor malfunction, and several already dead bodies are damaged by this. Characters also incur minor burns from hot infrastructure and Odo is affected by the heat and his impending need for rest in an idiosyncratic way that could come across as body horror. In some respects you can deduce that SOMETHING in the way of plot armor has to happen since it's an early seasons novel, so yeah the ending isn't as bleak as the first 90% of the book gets. I would argue that this was the best Star Trek book I've read to date and I probably read this over 10 years ago. They don't write them like this anymore which is a shame. Thoroughly enjoyed this book
