I hate that half star ratings don’t exist because this was definitely 3.5! 3 feels wrong but the 4’s should be savoured. This was such a weird twisted book and there were moments I didn’t know where we were headed but it all came together very well at the end. I got lost many many times and had to back track which may be fault of my own but also there was like over 50 characters and many we only met in passing so I don’t think they deserved names and it made it very confusing ultimately. But I liked it!!!

I have now finished all three GF novels, and read them in reverse order. This book feels like a first book, in light of the subsequent novels. Dank, claustrophic and damaged characters toiling through meaningless lives. Suffocating in their misery and not dissimilar to the stories of Tana French. However, the complexity and severity of Flynn's stories don't translate as meaningful or nuanced as her Irish counterpart. That isn't to say she doesn't write a good story - she does. But when dealing with such horrifying storylines as depression, self-mutilation and the violence against children, you feel like you reading through layers of tissue paper, detached from it where you are mercilessly sucked right into the moments French is creating. What will Gillian Flynn bring us next? I look forward to it.

This book is dark and disturbing but also great. Every character in this book made me cringe, especially Camille's sister Amma and friends throughout the whole story. I like that this is as much of a murder mystery as it is a romance (not much), it is so much more psychological and twisted. It's the kind of book that gets in your head a little bit. I loved the ending, I did not see it coming.
