I read this book with my Approaches to Literature class. It was one of some pretty dismal choices of books I had. I have ordered some new, different books for next year. I doubt I would use this book again. It had enough sexual references, drug references and swearing that it made me, as a teacher, uncomfortable reading it with my class. I also wasn't really sure what the point of the story was.

This was one of the books available to me as a teacher to use with my remedial reading class. I had read and "taught" the book before, but this time it really struck me how many references there are to alcohol use, drugs, sex, porn and violence in this book that has been taught in junior highs and high school for years. I don't plan to teach it again. There has got to be something just as appealing but far more uplifting, so I will search for that and develop new materials rather than use this tired old book that seems increasingly inappropriate as the years go by.

I picked up this book because I read/watched the Outsiders and met the absolute love of my life, Matt Dillon. Naturally, I found out that he was in S.E. Hinton's movie adaptations of her other two books, one of them being Rumblefish. I read it so I could watch the movies and this book was sad, poignant, and complicated. I couldn't decide if I hated or loved each of the characters and I truly felt Rusty-James's confusion at the world. The only thing that didn't get it a five star was it's lack of description, but I know that was probably purposeful because it's in a 14 year old boy's perspective and it's mentioned that he's not exactly "book smart." Also, I wanted to recommend this to two of my black friends who are also Outsiders stans but the racism made me hesitant to.

Kind of depressing book. Well written but you aren’t going to read it and fall into the happy daze some books can produce. Hinton writes very real characters and very flawed characters. I mean let’s be honest the main character of this book is very unlikeable at times. But with all of this the book is still a good read and has a powerful story about role models, finding yourself, and not conforming to what others want.
