I bought this book on kindle when it was first published but I ended up listening to the audio book during the month. I adored it as it’s read by Armistead Maupin himself so it was a lovely experience to hear him tell his own story. This is such a fascinating memoir of a life well-lived. He talks of how he was inspired to create some of the characters in Tales of the City, he shares about his upbringing and all the loss he experienced during the AIDS crisis. There is humour and sadness, and it’s just a wonderful memoir.

I really wanted this book to be exactly like the Tales of the City but of course, it couldn't be. It was good but not amazing.

If you like the writing of Armistead Maupin and want to know more about his childhood and family, this is a great book. Bonus: The audiobook is read by the author sho is charming and funny, of course. This is an interesting read because we see AM grow up trying to please his father and being a conservative who works with the likes of...Jesse Helms. Luckily for us, Armistead reaches San Francisco and the rest is history. Thanks, AM, for telling us some more tales of the city.

I had no idea of what Tales of the city or who Armistead Maupin was when I started to read this book. I knew about it because of the miniseries from Netflix and that was it. But the amount of amazing stories including the ability to realize your own prejudices and be able to change your political behavior because of your identity is an amazing thing. I loved reading Logical Family because it gave me another angle of gay life in San Francisco In the 70s and 80s also how much Maupin was was able to run in the same circle as famous artists and movie stars including Rock Hudson. Who I always hear the same thing when he was diagnosed with AIDS “nobody knew he was gay” and I’m thinking, other people who were around him. Armistead was one of the few who would go to “the castle” and knew Hudson was gay. And it is so crazy. Anyway, his story of his last visit with the old man was amazing and emotional. Because you think that his father didn’t accept him when in reality he did. Also I love dear Mama.
