I didn't really like the pacing , as I found that the dance scene was too quick. Overall the ending I felt was rushed as well.

Team RWBY investigates Mountain Glen after they got some intel about the White Fang and Roman. Roman conducts his first big plan..

I liked these adaptations of RWBY’s story, the art was great and it was fun but I felt that the manga focused too much on the action and we haven’t seen a lot of important foreshadowings for later, bigger plot points and character development was scarce. While the main characters are team RWBY the show is very much about team RWBY and their friends, and the other characters were really sidelined, especially team JNPR who are probably their closest friends.

We got to see the school dance which was a nice touch, and Jaune and Pyrrha’s friendship was portrayed really well but lots of very defining moments, especially for Jaune’s character were left out. There was also an important bonding that should have happened between Blake and Yang here, with Yang supporting her and looking out for Blake when she was overwoking herself. This was cut entirely, along with their shared dance which in my opinion had far more impact in the show than the dance Blake shared with Sun.

Roman also felt lackluster, here he is portrayed as a villain who enjoys being one but we don’t really learn much about his motives. While he was definitely a bad guy in the show, he was also incredibly fun, and that didn’t really come through in the manga for me.

The story closes with some open ended questions about who crashed the school party, but I don’t feel like it all really feels as impactful as the show did.

I feel that with so much emphasis on the action, and little character development or foreshadowings for what is to come a lot of RWBY’s magic was lost. Sure, you might get into RWBY for the interesting fight scenes and the crazy weapons but it creates such well developed characters that you keep coming back for more and storylines that develop later are so much more complicated and heavier than you would ever expect from the show at first glance.

All in all I think the manga is good to be appreciated as an extra material next to the show or to see if you would find the world interesting. It can be a great starting point for getting into RWBY but it leaves out so many important things that you shouldn’t take it as a complete portrayal of what RWBY can offer.

Thank you, Netgalley, for a complimentary copy of this manga in exchange for my honest review.

Unfortunately, this one was not for me at all! I was really excited to read this one and I really, really wanted to like it. The story itself is fantastic and so were the characters. However, the illustrations were super confusing. Most of the time, I didn't know what character was talking or fighting, who they were fighting, and what was going on. I have read a number of mangas, but this one does not rank among the list of my favorites. I'm sad about that! The idea was great, the implementation was not!

This volume starts out with a school dance, and gives us some fun character development to balance the action that follows. After the dance, the teams get their first missions as Hunters and Huntresses, and team RWBY is paired with Doctor Oobleck, and sent to the location they'd hoped to investigate- the area they suspect Rowan Torchwick and White Fang are hiding in. When Ruby disappears during her turn as lookout, the rest of the team set out to find her, and....I'm not telling!
The art is lovely as always, and the action just flows so nicely I can see it happening in my mind. This volume concludes the Beacon Arc with a satisfying, hopeful ending that looks toward further adventures, and I'm looking forward to the next arc!
