Fear Street #114

Sarah Watson's family is peculiar. Her mother is a research chemist who works with garbage and her father weaves articles for sale at craft fairs. Her older brother, Hal, is a complete nerd. Middle School, being the worst age to be alive, is a time of fluctuation and Sarah fears that her longtime best friend Evie is about to be lured away by new girl and Queen Bee Katie. Sarah longs for a different, cooler, family.

Then she finds the coin.

It's gold and on one side there's a picture of a woman, and on the other a terrifying reptilian face. It turns out that flipping the coin can bring Sarah to a different dimension, where everything is better. Shadyside is Sunnyside. Her parents and brother are completely different people now. Her parent's house is full of electronics and real furniture and food made of animal byproducts! I mean, we know there's going to be a catch.

'Parents from the 13th Dimension' was, uh, diverting, but it didn't have the extra edge I need to really get into a paralell dimension/"other mother" story. Any extra points come from the character of Sarah being so relatable and the story at least acknowledging real middle school issues.
