Simpatia opens with Ulises being left by his wife Paulina. When her father dies, Ulises is surprised to be the major beneficiary of the will - so long as he can convert the family estate into a sanctuary for abandoned dogs before the imposed deadline. This novel highlights aspects of post-Chavez Venezuela- corruption, state surveillance, and a fleeing population (hence the abandoned dogs) - while also showing how we all need meaning and connection. And it does so with plenty of references to The Godfather, the writings of Elizabeth von Arnim and Greek mythology. So a somewhat quirky but mostly enjoyable read, although dog-lovers may struggle with a few scenes.

Another book for the well read who can follow all the references, though not necessary for understanding it. This was excellent and the wonderful thing is that he probably has a better book in him. You can see a masterpiece in this guy. Can’t wait.
