When I came to the poem What My Name Means, I can't describe it. It felt very close to experiences I've had, and no doubt countless other trans and non binary people have had too. Having a nickname that's stuck around long after you've changed your name, one that doesn't fit and all it does it remind you of who you used to be.

The lines "no, i won’t explain to you why I have a right to exist. not now, not ever, so shut the fuck up." They feel right now, very close to reality for trans people in the UK. I don't want to go into politics, and I don't really want to talk about any of that here, so all I'll say is that I can relate to those lines very heavily.

While I'm not someone who is a particular fan of poetry, these poems spoke to me. I think perhaps when it comes to this type of literature I have to be interested in the topic or theme of it to like or enjoy it, which for these poems I did.

Thank you to author Danny McLaren for sending me an ARC copy of this book.
