As a longtime fan of Domino Finn, I was really happy to learn that he expanded the Black Magic Outlaw world with a new storyline and main character. His new book Tooth & Nail, and series Summoner for Hire, takes us into the life of Shyla Crowe, a summoner under the thumb of a demon named Bedrock. She's forced to work for him against her will for reasons you'll learn about in the book.

Finn doesn't disappoint with his characters in the least. Besides Shyla, we get to know her dad Paulson, Lambert, Teegan and other members of an angry biker gang, Trap, Custodian, Josalie, and a few other interesting characters. As usual, their interactions were funny, witty, heartfelt, angry, and run the gamut of the emotional spectrum. Throw in the occasional funny one liner and Finn once again created interesting, relatable, exciting and enjoyable characters.

Maybe it's just me, but this novel seemed a little darker than usual. My judgment might be clouded by Shyla though. Unlike Cisco Suarez, she's tough in her own way, but also vulnerable. She's innocent and caught up in problems that she didn't create. At times I felt so bad for her! But she used her knowledge, cunning, and summoning ability to pull through some sticky situations. And I was happy to "watch" it all unfold in my mind!

All in all, I really liked this story and can't wait to read the next installment in the series, which I believe is only a month away. If you're looking for a new gritty first person urban fantasy with a kick-ass female protagonist, Tooth & Nail is right up your alley. I highly recommend giving it a read. You won't be disappointed. Quite the opposite in fact.
