The more I read about Theo, the more I adore her. I'm not sure I'd be the kind of adult she'd like to hang out with... but I feel like I could learn an awful lot from her. A great solid second adventure and I look forward to reading the next one.

This is the second installment in the Theodosia series by R. L. LaFevers. I am pleased to report that it has a much better pace than the first novel (probably because there isn't much in the way of introducing new characters.) I am also glad to find that I enjoyed Theodosia as a character far more in this novel. She felt more fleshed out and three dimensional in this book.
I will definitely be checking out the third installment soon.

Continuing the fun from the first book, Theodesia Throckmorton finds her father placed under suspicion when mummies from museums all over London persist on appearing in her parents' museum each night.

A powerful curse, the Chaos bad guys, and a new secret society join together to make Theodesia's life difficult (not to mention her formidable grandmother trying to find her a governess.)

Her pickpocket friend Will and her contact in the secret Brotherhood help Theodesia save the day.

While I find myself having to suspend my disbelief a little more than usual (really, Mr. Secret Agent dude, the most important weapon of destruction is better off in the hands of a little girl because she might be in danger if the bad guys ask her for it, really?) it is all good fun in this book. You still have the quirky little-girl voice of Theodesia, the lovely ignoring of her by her parents, the silly antics of her pickpocket friend and now some assistant curators at her parent's museum, as well as a satisfying conclusion.

This Book's Food Designation Rating: Pumpkin scones for the continuing buttery goodness of the satisfying story, characterization, and the iceing of learing more about Egyptian history and customs.

I liked this second volume better than the first, likely because it seemed like the action was moving along at a better pace and the reader has gotten to know the characters better. It seems like the book is building up to a more complex plot, so I'm interested to find out what will happen :)

The second Theo book is just as fun as the first and not suffering in any way from sophmore slump syndrome. The writing is a little stronger in this book and I think LaFevers has really found her groove and is having as much fun writing this series as I am reading it. Thoroughly enjoyable and recommended. These books are perfect to share as a bedtime read (though there are some scary parts for young children as ghosts, mummies and other nasties do appear) with your son or daughter. Theo is a resourceful, smart and cunning heroine.
