This is a very diverse collection of stories, in topic, style and mood, though all of them deal in some way with the anthology's theme. Several of the pieces deal with sex and gender issues, some more or less in passing, and cybernetic, virtual and reconstituted bodies are also dwelt upon. I would have been interested to read something about migrants and illicit immigration, especially since that was mentioned in the foreword, but I very much enjoyed Lori Selke's story 'Frankenstein Unraveled', which thrust related anxieties about healthcare, insurance and undocumented status onto a certain monster. Two others that will stay with me for a long while are 'Her Bones, Those of the Dead' by Tracie Welser and the downright haunting 'Millie' by Anna Caro. Even the slighter stories in this collection are strengthened when read alongside the others and considered as different angles on the theme of 'outlaw bodies'. This collection was a quick read but an entertaining and thought-provoking one.
