The writing wasn't the best, but the intriguing, unique plot and awesomeness of Hetty and Benjy made up for it. I had a little trouble keeping some of the characters straight; I think because some of them felt one-dimensional. I really enjoyed the story, and absolutely loved the evolvement of Hetty and Benjy's relationship! I will definitely pick up the next one in this series. I think Nicole Glover is one to watch!

Awesome historical mystery set in an alternative Philadelphia where magic does exist. Former underground railroad conductors help their community by solving crimes that the police don't card about including kidnappings, murder, and theft.

This book was a mixed bag for me.

I loved the representation and the magical world Nicole Glover created. It didn't feel like the standard magic rules that most books follow, which made it fresh and interesting to read.

However, I had a difficult time feeling connected with the characters because I felt that there were simply too many. Besides the main two characters (the husband and wife duo), I didn't feel like I really got to know any of the side characters beyond a surface level, and I was even struggling to remember who was who by the end of the book. I wish she had developed the minor characters to a greater degree and/or included less of them.

A+ concept and ideas. I was so excited for this book, but the writing style didn't work for me. Listened to the audio and even Bahni Turpin couldn't save it for me.  the magic system was unique and creative but I couldn't find any consistent logic to it. The cast was delightfully black,  with the only named white character having a secret of her own.  Friendship was a huge part of the story, and I loved the inclusion of a queer couple.  So much to like.  I just wish I would have enjoyed it more overall.

I really enjoyed this story. I would love to follow more of their searches. As the ending wrapped up, the story slowed and I lost some interest.

DNF at 10%. The premise is awesome but the writing is just…not for me.
